ABOUT OUR HOTEL

We stayed at the Westin Europa and Regina, www.westin.com/europaregina, close to San Marcos Piazza.  We could not have been more delighted.  I'd heard mixed things about this hotel -- they do have some small rooms, but we had a large, beautiful one.  Including the entry and bathroom I estimate it was about 600 square feet.  It was decorated with a lot of Venetian character -- from pictures and fabrics to the ornate chandelier.  We had Westin's Heavenly Beds, turndown service at night with chocolates, and terrycloth slippers and robes.  The closet was large with lots of hangers.  Central air came in handy as a couple of nights were warm.  The large marble bathroom had a separate tub and shower, bath sheets, hairdryer, and Venetian glass light sconces afixed to the mirror over the sink.  Our balcony view, although limited, was beautiful.  The rest of the hotel was just as beautiful.  (Can you tell we liked it?)

Shortly after settling into the room we heard a knock at the door -- someone was delivering a bottle of champagne -- courtesy of the management.  On my first trip to Europe in 1979 I stayed in the thriftiest -- no, make that the cheapest -- accommodations possible without going the hostel route.  You know, bathroom down the hall, bring your own soap and towel (no kidding), and 100 steps up without an elevator.  Glad I did it and glad I don't have to travel that way any more!
